Teaching kids to be safe around dogs

Dogs are the most popular pet in the United States. Statistically, they’re also one of the most dangerous. Every year, children are bitten, and some even suffer fatal bites.

This is why it’s important for parents to teach children how to be safe around dogs that they do not know. Part of the issue is that many children have a family dog at home that they’re very familiar with and comfortable around. But if they treat an unknown dog in the same way, it can lead to an attack.

The right tone of voice

For instance, when meeting a dog for the first time, it can be helpful to talk to it in a sing-song voice or in low and soothing tones. This helps to demonstrate to the dog that the person is not a threat. Children who are excited about seeing dogs may be loud and expressive about their excitement, which a dog could mistake for aggression.

Letting the dog initiate

In some situations, it’s best for the dog to initiate contact and for the child to simply wait. They may want to run up and give the dog a pat, a hug or immediately pet it, but this could be very dangerous. Instead, children should allow the dog to approach them when it feels comfortable.

Reading body language

Finally, dogs often communicate through body language. If a dog is rigid or stiff, for instance, it may be feeling uncomfortable, frightened or nervous. Children need to learn how to read the dog’s body language so they know when a dog is just excited and happy to see them or when it is feeling nervous and may be more likely to bite.

Unfortunately, serious dog bites happen even when children do everything correctly. Family members need to know exactly what legal options they have to seek financial compensation.
