Reasons people run stop signs

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2025 | Personal Injury

It’s very common for drivers to run stop signs. Intersections that are controlled by stop signs account for roughly 33% of intersection accidents, for example. These are also highly likely to lead to serious injuries, including 40% of fatal crashes.

But why does this happen? Properly navigating sign-controlled intersections is one of the first things people learn in driver’s ed and a relatively easy rule to follow. Why do people run stop signs and cause so many serious accidents anyway?

Driver distraction

One major issue is just driver distraction, which means that the driver may never see the stop sign at all. They could be looking down at their phone, for example, and they don’t realize they ran the stop sign until they’ve caused a crash.

They don’t see other vehicles

In some cases, drivers will actually run stop signs intentionally just because they don’t see anyone else at the intersection. They assume that they don’t actually need to stop, even though that’s not how traffic laws work.

They’re in a hurry

In many cases, drivers will say that they slowed down, even if they didn’t come to a full stop. The trouble is just that they’re in a hurry and impatient, so they’re rushing, and that can lead to serious driving mistakes.

Impaired driving

Of course, there is also the issue of drunk driving or drug-impaired driving. Someone who is under the influence of alcohol or other substances may not see the stop sign or realize that it applies to them.

Seeking financial compensation

Have you been injured in an accident caused by another driver who ran a stop sign? If so, you may be able to seek financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other costs.
