Johannes Claus is the newest addition to the firm of Mauk, Miller & Hawkins. Johannes has over 14 years of experience as an attorney, primarily in the areas of criminal defense, family law, environmental law and government procurement.
During his career, Johannes has defended over a dozen clients in criminal jury trials and successfully appealed a jury verdict in a criminal case, causing the prosecutor to dismiss the charge. In family law cases, Johannes has reunited parents with their children and secured changes in custody to the benefit of his clients.
Johannes is a former Air Force JAG where he held the rank of Captain. He served eight years in locations as varied as North Carolina, Turkey, Iraq, Illinois and California. He protected and preserved natural resources on federal land, advised commanders on legal issues concerning humanitarian rescue operations in Haiti and Japan following natural disasters, and negotiated terms of international agreements with our partners in Great Britain and in the Pacific.
Johannes Claus earned his Bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and German from Boise State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and as a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Johannes attended Northwestern University School of Law as a Edward H. McDermott scholar. He published his paper on European Union trade policy, served as an Executive Editor of the Journal of International Law and Business at Northwestern, and ultimately graduated on the Dean’s List.
From 2005 to 2013, Johannes Claus served as an active duty officer, and received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his legal work in the International “Green” Zone of Baghdad Iraq in 2008, as well Air Force Commendation Medals for his efforts in preserving endangered species in North Carolina in 2007 and in response to international humanitarian crises in 2010. In 2013, Johannes left the military and entered a different type of public service, working for Twin Falls and Canyon Counties for 3 years as a criminal defense attorney.
Johannes is a dedicated father to his three school age children who live with him in east Boise. He enjoys taking them up to the ski slopes in the winter and out on the family boat during summers.
